Mickey Guyton releases “Black Like Me” and it’s a must listen
We usually include new music in a round-up post each week. However, there is a song that was released this week that is too important to possibly get lost in a round-up post.
Mickey Guyton already released a song earlier in the year that punches you in the gut. “What Are You Gonna Tell Her” was released in March about the struggles women and girls face. It’s, for some reason, a controversial topic.
Now, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the police brutality protests since, Mickey says the song was a “God” moment for her and released “Black Like Me”.
“If you think we live in the land of the free, you should try to be black like me.”
It’s an authentic look at what it means to be Black in the United States. It’s a must listen. Inevitably, it will be met with mixed reactions.
Mickey says it best: “They say, ‘shut up and sing’. So I put what I have to say in my songs.”
